This is a joint press release by Africell Uganda Limited (“Africell”) and Stanbic Bank Uganda Limited (“Stanbic Bank”) pursuant to the provisions of the Escrow Agreement in connection with Stanbic Bank paying over funds in Africell’s Escrow Account held in Stanbic Bank to its subscribers and agents after Africell’s Mobile Money services are terminated on 7 October 2021.


Africell UG is permanently ending all mobile network services in Uganda on 7 October 2021. Afrimoney subscribers with unused balance as of 7 October 2021 can continue to claim a refund through Africell UG until 7 October 2021 by dialling *111#. After 7 October 2021, Afrimoney subscribers with unused balance will need to claim a refund directly from Stanbic Bank.


Stanbic Bank will pay over the funds to the subscribers and agents for a period of ninety (90) days. If there will be any outstanding payments to be made after the lapse of the ninety (90) days, a thirty (30) day extension period will be considered by Stanbic Bank.


All Africell subscribers and agents who seek to claim their Afrimoney balances after 7 October 2021 will be required to follow the process below.


§ Subscribers: A formal request will be made to Stanbic Bank by the subscriber requesting for withdrawal of funds together with a designated bank account or mobile money number where the funds will be remitted. This request will be accompanied by a copy of the subscriber’s National Identification Card. Upon receipt of the aforementioned information, the subscriber’s details will be verified against the database provided by Africell.


§ Agents: A formal request will be made to Stanbic Bank from the agent to liquidate funds to a designated bank account (via RTGS or EFT) or to an alternative mobile money number.


Within Central and Greater Kampala, we have designated the following branches to manage the process; Wandegeya. Makerere, Natete, Ntinda, Bugolobi, Kireka, Mukono, Entebbe, William Street and Lugogo branch. Any Africell customers upcountry can use any of our upcountry branches closest to them.
